Hermosa Beach Motorcyclist Injured in Collision

The two-vehicle crash closes northbound Sepulveda Boulevard for hours as Manhattan Beach police conduct an investigation. Motorcyclist taken to hospital.

A Hermosa Beach man was critically injured when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a Mercedes-Benz vehicle around 4:30 p.m., said Manhattan Beach Police Lieutenant Andy Harrod at the scene Thursday night around 8 p.m.

When called around 9:50 p.m., Harrod told Patch that the latest report he had was that the male motorcyclist was still in surgery--the news coming from another MBPD officer who returned to the accident scene from the hospital around 8:20 p.m.

The collision happened as the motorcyclist was heading north on Sepulveda Boulevard in the lane closest to the center divider, said Harrod. The driver of the Mercedes was heading south on Sepulveda, and the motorcycle broadsided the Mercedes when it turned left in front of the bike.

At the collision scene, a twisted motorcycle remained in the northbound lanes of Sepulveda at Tennyson Street; the Mercedes on the sidewalk nearby facing north, extensive damage to its passenger-side front door visible.

Harrod said that two good samaritan citizens rendered CPR and first aide to the motorcyclist until paramedics arrived. "Our paramedics kept him (the motorcyclist) alive," said Harrod, explaining that the man's injuries were serious.

The northbound lanes of Sepulveda Boulevard were closed from Artesia Boulevard to about a half block past Tennyson, near the El Torito restaurant. Harrod said that investigators were using a tripod system to get measurements of evidence at the scene which will then be turned into a diagram by computer software.
