National Event Prompts 'Flasher' Night in Manhattan Beach

Manhattan Beach Police Chief Eve R. Irvine, Captain Tim Hageman, Crime Prevention Officer Stephanie Martin and Neighborhood Watch volunteer Millie Newton visited 13 blocks in the city during National Night Out Tuesday. Patrol officers and members of the fire department also participated.

Neighbors gathered for barbecues, ice cream socials, a pizza party, dessert and wine potluck, neighborhood scavenger hunt, social get togethers and a "Flasher" night, using their creativity to participate in the nationwide event designed to fight crime and prevent drug abuse.

Residents of Senior Villas tested their flashlight batteries by shining them on their patios as part of their "flasher" participation, said Martin.
