Officers Gather to Remember Martin Ganz

Manhattan Beach Police Officer Martin Ganz was killed on Dec. 27, 1993. Every year, officers and others gather to honor him.

Martin Ganz, the 27-year-old Manhattan Beach Police Officer killed in the line of duty on Dec. 27, 1993, is being remembered by MBPD colleagues and other community members. MBPD officers will gather at 11 p.m. to honor him.

Earlier today, MBPD officers placed flowers at his memorial and tidied it up, according to Officer Stephanie Martin, who participated.

A Manhattan Beach Patch article describes how Ganz was killed: "Ganz, accompanied by his 13-year-old nephew on a ride-along, had pulled over a car for a traffic violation in the Manhattan Village Mall during a holiday DUI patrol. As Ganz walked toward the car, the driver, Brady, shot the officer once in the chest and face, fatally wounding him."

In 2010, the California Supreme Court affirmed the death sentence of the man convicted of killing Ganz, Roger Hoan Brady.

"[Ganz] was a friend to many of us," said Martin in 2010. "We all knew each other pretty personally. He was a jokester. He loved a good time."
