Residents Gather to Fight Crime and Prevent Drug Use

Neighborhood Watch groups in Manhattan Beach will participate in a nationwide event to fight crime by bringing people together.

Neighborhood Watch blocks and the Manhattan Beach Police Department are partnering to participate in the “30th Annual National Night Out” crime and drug prevention event Tuesday.

The Manhattan Beach Neighborhood Watch contingent, which joins more than 15,700 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world expected to turn out for National Night Out, which is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, will be visited by Manhattan Beach police officers.

Everyone is invited to turn on their outside lights in observance of National Night Out.

The National Night Out event is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for and participation in, local anticrime efforts (i.e. Neighborhood Watch), strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships and send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back, said Stephanie Martin of the Manhattan Beach Police Department who, among other duties, coordinates the city's Neighborhood Watch program.

Called “America’s Night Out Against Crime," National Night in Manhattan Beach will be celebrated with celebrated with block parties and social events to encourage neighbors to come together to enjoy the evening.

Nationwide, some 37.5 million people are expected to participate in events and activities in their communities.
