Suspect in Alleged Attempted Murder, Robbery in Custody

Manhattan Beach police report that the 18-year-old believed responsible for slashing the throat of an employee during a robbery has been caught. Details here.

About one week and seven hours after the crime took place, an inter-agency team has captured the suspect wanted for the alleged attempted murder of an employee at and robbery of the Cigar and Smoke Shop on Thursday, Aug. 16.

Tyler Rodgers was taken into custody by a Los Angeles County Sheriff's surveillance team Thursday around 11:30 p.m., said Detective Michael Rosenberger of the Manhattan Beach Police Department, the city in which the crime occurred.

Rodgers was found in the 7200 block of Crenshaw Boulevard hiding with a 16-year-old female runaway who had been reported missing. She was returned to her place of residence, said Rosenberger.

Rosenberger said the primary charges expected to be filed against Rodgers are attempted murder and robbery. Rodgers is in MBPD custody and will be transported to court Tuesday for an arraignment.

The store employee whose throat was slashed during the robbery is out of the hospital and mending, said Rosenberger.

Wednesday, MBPD and Gardena SWAT each served a search warrant at Rodgers' known residence and another location. Rosenberger told Patch Wednesday that evidence was recovered during the execution of the search warrants.

Rosenberger said the sheriff's had offered to help find Rodgers, providing 9 to 10 deputies for the search. Additionally assistance came from the L.A. County Probation Department and the Department of Children and Family Services.

"WHEN WILL BLACK PEOPLE STOP THIS BEHAVIOR". Seriously? The internet has really pulled the curtain off of many peoples deep seeded bigotry. I am glad as ever they caught this sick and twisted individual. There is absolutely no excuse for attempting to take another persons life. David Trommer, you sir are an idiot for standing up for this guy. Why are you trying to make him look good in any way. You sound like an immature teenager. Wow, you "know" this guy, you are so cool! "He is a really nice/likeable person, not what the media says he is." Well, unless "the media" is wrong about how he robbed this store owner and tried to kill him afterwards then Tyler is not a nice and likeable person, and if you thought he was, I'm very surprised you think he still is nice and likeable after you found this out about him. Don't be such a fool. Seriously. As stupid (and ignorant) as the guy commenting about Blacks/Mexicans, your comment by far exceeds it in its sheer idiocracy. Blacks and Mexicans as a whole are in much more poverty than any other race in America. Crime and violence go hand in hand with severe poverty of any race or community. The media's glorification of "thugness", especially minority thugness, is undoubtedly a contributor to these types of behavior as it does nothing but add fuel to the fire and make a bad problem worse.

Yea, he is a real nice guy, what losers you people are for supporting this guy. And for you folks that say this is attributed to poverty are full of it. This is due to bad parenting and a lack of values. There are many poor countries where people do not resort to this kind of behaviour. This sate is doomed, its because they are poor, no power plants in my city - what a bunch of losers

Dale Smith. Are you telling me that he robbed the place due to bad parenting and a lack of values? No, the main reason he robbed this place is for money because he probably had very little and was desperate, not to mention irrational and borderline maniacle. Are you disputing the fact that poverty and crime/violence are not joined at the hip? Take money out of the equation and this crime does not happen. While I do agree that good parenting and instilling good values play a big part in the development and overall outcome of the adult and his or her chatracter, I also believe that in many cases even good parenting can be ineffective depending on the personality of the child. To your point, I GUARANTEE that this kids father was rarely if ever around and his. Bottom line is that you can have good parents/bad kids and vice versa. The media and societal attitudes/values (influenced by media) have a large hand in the molding of our children and they are, for the most part, not positive at all. This kid was living like a king compared to poor people in lesser countries yet he was so unsatisfied with his monetary situation that he decided to rob a damn cigar shop. American culture is all about the dollar first and values a distant second or third perhaps fourth.
