Bomb Threat at Mira Costa

Manhattan Beach Police respond to an anonymous report of a student with a bomb on campus. They determine the threat to be unfounded.

An allegation of a student on campus with a bomb at Mira Costa High on Wednesday could not be substantiated, according to Manhattan Beach police and Manhattan Beach Unified School District personnel who spent about an hour scouring the campus and its perimeter shortly after 12 noon.

An anonymous caller had told police dispatchers that a senior male student who drives a Suburban had a bomb, said Stephanie Martin, MB Police Department public information officer.

Four Manhattan Beach police officers and a member of the MB Fire Department searched the campus, and parking lots as well as the area around the school looking for the Suburban, said Martin.

The campus was not locked down or evacuated, but the option was considered, according to Mike Matthews, superintendent for the Manhattan Beach Unified School District. Martin said the caller was hesitant to provide more details, including the name of the student with the bomb and that locking down or evacuating a school "depends on the details."

"We worked with MBPD to examine the threat, determine the credibility of that threat, examined the campus and made the determination that there wasn't any kind of evidence to substantiate the details of the phone call," said Matthews.

The cell phone call was received first by the Redondo Beach Police Department and was transferred to MBPD.

Martin, who has worked for MBPD as Mira Costa's school resource officer, said it's not uncommon for schools to receive notice of threats, especially during mid-term and final exams and when a student has been disciplined or has not completed a homework assignment.

Liz, thanks for this info. You and MB Patch have been so great about covering our schools, whether it's for something like this or for things like school events. It means a lot to our community to have this coverage. And you're FAST at getting the news online. You're keeping the other South Bay media on their toes! Keep up the great work.
