5 Things to Know About MB

1. If you want to participate in the 34th Annual 2011 Manhattan Beach 10k being held on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 7:30 a.m., you need to register by midnight on Thursday, Sept. 22. Registration will not be taken on race day, according to the registration Web site. Register online here. Walkers are welcome.

Award categories are grouped by age, two family members [i.e., father-son, sister-sister] participating as a team, and for individuals who weigh 200 pounds and more. Youth under nine years who complete the entire course will receive a ribbon.

2. Will South Bay Open Carry attend the 39th Annual Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair, set for Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 1 and 2? According to a post yesterday at 7:18 a.m. on their Facebook page, "SBOC is still negotiating with Manhattan Beach regarding a booth and about what is actually the 1000 foot perimeter around American Martrys [sp] School in that city."

3. Retired Manhattan Beach police canine Rex will call Officer Tim Zins' home his home once City Council approves the transfer of his ownership from the city to Zins at its 6:30 p.m. meeting in Council chambers. Rex was retired in the last few months due to physical limitations, after serving with Officer Zins, his handler, for seven years. He was involved in numerous felony arrests and received recognition and awards. 

4. Breast cancer survivors from Manhattan Beach will join with other breast cancer patients and survivors tomorrow from 4-5 p.m. as "Bust a Move" with Dancing With the Stars' Anna Trebunskaya takes over the You Can Dance Studio in Hermosa Beach. Fifty breast cancer survivors and patients will learn basic dance steps while enjoying the social benefits that group dancing can bring, improving well-being and self-esteem, key facets of boosting immunity. The event, which is not open to the public is designed to raise awareness of the importance of screening mammograms, available from Torrance Memorial Hospital for $125 during a limited-time offer.

5. Last Friday, Patch staff pitched in to help at the Manhattan Beach Botanical Garden. Local editors from Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach and Palos Verdes Patch Web sites raked California Sycamore leaves off of Yankee Point Ceanothus, among other tasks. 

This Saturday, you can volunteer during National Public Lands Day and tell a friend to find a place near their home that is looking for volunteer. Use the handy "Find a Site" page to input your zip code or other information to locate volunteer opportunities. Nearby in the Venice/Marina del Rey area, Toyota and Audubon have partnered to remove invasive vegetation at the Audubon Least Tern Colony. Locations include Rolling Hills Estates, Long Beach, Seal Beach, Malibu and Los Angeles.
