Cities Look at Japan's Vitality Formula

The governor of Okinawa, Japan, visits the Beach Cities in an exchange of health and longevity tips.

Efforts to improve the community well-being of Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach were behind Okinawa Gov. Hirokazu Nakaima's visit to Redondo Beach on Tuesday morning.

Okinawa is one of five "blue zones," a geographical area where healthy living habits apparently contribute to the world's longest life spans.

"There is so much that we can learn from each other, from the lifestyle of the people of Okinawa over hundreds and thousands of years," said Redondo Beach Mayor Mike Gin about what Okinawa can contribute to the Beach Cities.

The meeting was part of the three Beach Cities' efforts to become Vitality City areas, a three-year process that seeks to better the health and longevity of a community through various educational programs.

Healthways, a provider of health and benefit information to health insurers and employers, and the Beach Cities Health District are spearheading the initiative. Tuesday's event was held at Seaside Lagoon in Redondo Beach.
