County Requires City to Waive Its Own Alcohol Ordinance to Serve Alcohol on Beach at Centennial Party

Los Angeles County returns city's permit request to serve alcohol on the beach by asking for three criteria to be met.

A city ordinance prohibiting alcohol on the beach will have to be waived by Manhattan Beach in order to include the imbibing of alcohol on the beach at the city's September Centennial Ball.

The Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors, which has jurisdiction over the beach, has told the city it must secure an ABC license, waive the city ordinance and increase security for the county to approve the request.

City Manager Dave Carmany told Manhattan Beach Patch the city attorney is researching the matter of waiving the ordinance.

According to Carol Baker, division chief, community and marketing services division, for the Dept. of Beaches and Harbors, the city will need to submit the requested materials at least 6-8 weeks prior to the event to allow time for the county to issue a response.

MB residents Gerry O'Connor and Ed Caprielian, among others, have been outspoken opponents of the city's plans to hold a centennial party with alcohol allowed on the beach.
