Great California ShakeOut

More than 4.5 million Californians have already registered to participate in the 2010 Great California ShakeOut on Oct. 21.

If you or your organization has not yet renewed your registration, log in today to update your information and confirm your participation in this year's drill. Now is the time to plan how you will participate.

The ShakeOut is an opportunity for us to prepare together, before a major earthquake happens again in California. To help, ShakeOut is sending participants preparedness tips each month, following the Seven Steps of Earthquake Safety: Step 6: Check it Out!

One of the first things you should do following a major disaster (if you are not injured) is to check for injuries and damages that need immediate attention. Make sure you are trained in first aid and know how to identify hazards such as damaged gas, water and electrical lines. The webpage for this step has basic instructions for assessing injuries and damages and how to handle each appropriately.

Firefighters, preparedness officials and other experts agree that "Drop, Cover and Hold On" is the best way to protect yourself during earthquakes. Other methods can be very dangerous. Read the special report to learn why.

Help friends, relatives, communities, employers and others get prepared by encouraging them to register to participate in the ShakeOut. Let them know you are participating, and ask them to join. You can also display posters, distribute flyers and use other materials available on the ShakeOut resources page.

The ShakeOut has formed the Earthquake Country Alliance to foster an earthquake and tsunami resilient California. If you're interested in learning more about the alliance, join here.
