Harold Roach Art Sculpture May Be Moved

Donated in 1982, the sculpture is in need of refurbishment, says the Leadership Manhattan Beach Class of 2012. LMB would like to move the sculpture to another spot in its sustainable garden project.

To make way for a decomposed granite pathway in its sustainable garden project outside the post office downtown at 15th Street and Ardmore Avenue, Leadership Manhattan Beach is asking for permission to move a city-owned art sculpture at LMB's expense, according to a staff report by Richard Gill, director of Parks and Recreation, and Megumi Sando, acting cultural arts manager, for the city.

The new pathway would be four-feet wide to be ADA-compliant, according to the report. The sculpture, donated by Harold Roach in 1982, would be moved closer to the post office building, its pedestal sunk into the ground, with thick shrubs and imbedded boulders used to keep the public a safe distance away.

The Cultural Arts Commission will discuss the proposal at its meeting at 6 p.m. tonight in the city's Police/Fire Conference Room at 400/420 15th Street and include its recommendations in the final landscape plan that will be presented to City Council for approval.

LMB also made suggestions on the upkeep of the sculpture, which it notes has peeling paint and needs refurbishment. The group proposes "Stripping the old paint and either leave the piece in its natural state or paint it a color to match its natural state" of weathering metal or "Return it to the original colors of when it was installed (turquoise and mauve)."

During the meeting, the commission will also discuss the use of public art funds for art created for or used in what will become the city's new public library [owned and operated by Los Angeles County] and in honor of the city's centennial.
