Moves are being made to lay the groundwork for a renovation of Manhattan Village, the only indoor mall in Manhattan Beach.
The shopping center, which opened in 1980 and includes strip-mall type retail stores in the parking areas outside of the indoor mall, has not had any new buildings added since 2002.
Members of the public now have a 45-day window, through July 23 to comment on the draft environmental impact report (DEIR) for the revitalization of Manhattan Village. Hardcopies of the DEIR are available for review at the city's Community Development Department, 1400 Highland Avenue and at the Manhattan Beach County of Los Angeles Public Library, 1320 Highland Avenue.

According to the city's website, "A Final EIR, which will incorporate responses to public comments on the Draft EIR, is anticipated to be completed by the end of the year. The project also includes a Master Use Permit, Variance, Sign Program and Sign Exception and a Development Agreement. Planning Commission and City Council public hearings will be held during the process and the public is encouraged to participate and provide input."
A public Planning Commission workshop/meeting on the project will be held June 27 at 6:30 p.m. in Council Chambers at city hall, 1400 Highland Avenue.
The current proposed revitalization plans will take place in three phases, according to a press release:
THE VILLAGE SHOPS
• Construction of approximately 60,000 square feet of net new retail/restaurant space in a pedestrian-friendly “village” surrounding the existing California Pizza Kitchen and China Grill buildings.
• Construction of two separate, parking decks adjacent to the new village shops as well as demolition of “Parcel 17” shops (Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, East Coast Bagels, See’s Candies and Great Earth Vitamins).
NORTHEAST CORNER (contingent on Macy's decision to expand its current store)
• Construction of an approximately 50,000 square foot addition to the north side of the existing Macy’s store.
• Demolition of the existing 21,128 square feet of retail/theater buildings.
• Construction of a parking deck adjacent to the Macy’s store.
NORTHWEST CORNER (Following the departure of Fry’s Electronics upon its lease expiration, in 2016.)
• Demolition of the existing 46,200-square-foot Fry’s store.
• Construction of approximately 82,000 square feet of new retail/restaurant space.
• Connection of the Fry’s corner parking lot to the main center parking lot by building over the existing railroad culvert.
