Move to Keep Banks, Offices Out of Downtown, North End Fails

Opponents and supporters of the zoning change spoke passionately about their concerns at last week's planning commission meeting in Manhattan Beach.

A proposal that would have set limits on the sites of banks and office space in downtown and the north Manhattan Beach business area failed to get through the city's planning commission last week.

The proposal, which aimed to change zoning code commercial regulations, was put forth under the idea of keeping the small town character of those business areas. Property owners and real estate agents questioned the proposal; many residents and retail business owners welcomed some sort of action to keep the atmosphere they think is vital to their businesses.
