The City Council is set to wrap up the final designs for a series of new stairs leading from the Strand to the beach.
The city of Manhattan Beach is planning on replacing 20 sets of stairs. Recently, the council discussed the look of the future handrails, and this Tuesday, members are expected to choose a design for the retaining walls.
The big question is, how fancy do they want to get?
The existing walls (see photos) a patchwork of repaired concrete. Councilmembers will view a number of styles for the wall, including clean concrete, concrete with sandblasted figures or form-lined concrete in 3D, according to a presentation prepared for the council.
The council will consider several designs using the sandblasting technique, including dolphins and a whale.
Prices range from $50,000 on the low end for plain concrete up to $340,000 for ornate form-lined styles. Sandblasting would vary from $77,500 to $112,500, according to the presentation.
The council meets at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 1400 Highland Ave. in Manhattan Beach.
