The City Council is set to wrap up the final designs for a series of new stairs leading from the Strand to the beach.

The city of Manhattan Beach is planning on replacing 20 sets of stairs. Recently, the council discussed the look of the future handrails, and this Tuesday, members are expected to choose a design for the retaining walls.

The big question is, how fancy do they want to get?

The existing walls (see photos) a patchwork of repaired concrete. Councilmembers will view a number of styles for the wall, including clean concrete, concrete with sandblasted figures or form-lined concrete in 3D, according to a presentation prepared for the council.

The council will consider several designs using the sandblasting technique, including dolphins and a whale.

Prices range from $50,000 on the low end for plain concrete up to $340,000 for ornate form-lined styles. Sandblasting would vary from $77,500 to $112,500, according to the presentation.

The council meets at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 1400 Highland Ave. in Manhattan Beach.

I would keep it simple with the plain wall or surf. The dolphin and whale are too ornate.

I like a simple design, classic or modern (like the first in your pictures or the surf) Also, as much as I love dolphins and whales, it looks like design for an aquarium.

The obvious choice is the dolphin because Southern California's official state fish is the whale.

I would like to see a different design at each entrance. I think they are all nice and it would be lovely to see the wave, the dolphin and the whale at different block entrances.

BTW the state fish is the Golden Trout.

the wave in the first picture (as all waves are going in the same direction unlike one other proposal. I think the fish make it seem more like an aquarium than an entrance to a beach and sea.

Its absolutely amazing what City Council spends their money on .. meanwhile The Beach Reporter and every fast food joint in town is littering the town with newspapers and flyers. Would be nice if they met to discuss keeping the beach clean instead of creating a facade.
