'Taste' Event at Shade, an MB Blvd. Preschool, and Chocolate Mint Day

Residents have a chance to voice their opinion about a proposed preschool at 1030 Manhattan Beach Boulevard at Tuesday night's City Council meeting. City Hall is closed on Monday; public school is out until Monday, Feb. 27 in Manhattan Beach.

1. Get your tickets for the 4th Annual Taste of the South Bay, held at Shade Hotel, 1221 North Valley Drive, on Sunday, Feb. 19 from 6 to 9 p.m. Confirmed Manhattan Beach restaurants include MB Post, The Strand House, Darren's, Mucho Ultima Mexicana, Tin Roof Bistro, Cupcakes Couture of Manhattan Beach, BrewCo., The Belamar Hotel's Second Story Bistro, ROCK'N FISH, zinc@shade and Fresh Brothers. Nearby El Segundo establishments Fleming's Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar, Rock & Brews, La Sirena Bar and Grill and Paul Martin's American Bistro are expected to participate along with Hermosa Beach spots Hot's Kitchen and Watermans. Remaining general admission tickets, which include one raffle ticket, cost $60 per person. Funds benefit the Los Angeles hockey team Kings Care Foundation, which aids youth education programs, and players from the L.A. Kings will join in the food fest.

2. If you have an opinion or want to learn more about a proposed preschool at 1030 Manhattan Beach Boulevard, just one business shy of Sepulveda Boulevard, attend the Tuesday, Feb. 21 City Council meeting during which Council will conduct a public hearing before voting on staff's recommendation to allow the preschool with conditions.

3. According to Internet lore, Chocolate Mint Day is always Feb. 19, so go ahead and indulge in your favorite chocolate mint goodie. Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies anyone?! If a girl scout hasn't visited your home or sold you some cookies yet, they'll be out and about from 3 to 6 p.m. on Friday, March 2 at a variety of MB locations selling cookies. Here's a "cookie locator." Manhattan Beach Patch has confirmed that Manhattan Beach Creamery will have homemade chocolate mint ice cream on Sunday, Feb. 19. According to its website, Cupcakes Couture sells a Winter Mint cupcake, a flourless fudge cake filled with mint fudge and peppermint buttercream frosting, everyday. SusieCakes also lists a Chocolate Mint cupcake on its website as an everyday option. And, of course, there's always the grasshopper martini.

4. Public school kids in Manhattan Beach, preschool through 12 grade, are out of school for a week-long break. School re-opens on Monday, Feb. 27. A few Mira Costa High sports teams have some games during the break. The boys basketball team squares off against No. 2 seed Compton at home on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. Admission is $8 per person, $5 for each person under 13 or a student with student ID. Go Mustangs!

5. City Hall will be closed on Monday, Feb. 20 in observance of President's Day and will open again for business on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 8 a.m.
