North MB Business District News

The Business Improvement District has $517,072 in its coffers. Its new advisory board will present potential expenditures to City Council. Lighted crosswalks may get the nod in 2012.

As required by state law, the Manhattan Beach City Council made a decision to approve the annual renewal of the North Manhattan Beach Business Improvement District and its assessments at Council's Tuesday night meeting.

The current North Manhattan Beach BID was formed in 1989 to use funds derived from North MB businesses via a business license fee surcharge for physical improvements, signage, marketing and promotions, among other activities, according to a city staff report.

Collections for this fiscal year are estimated to be $23,000, said the same staff report, which lists the North MB BID reserves total at $517,072, including $213,707 that remains for a capital improvement project for beautification originally budgeted in fiscal year 2006-2007, with a total project cost of $370,000. The $213,707 in funds have been carried forward into FY 2011-2012.

The North MB BID operates under an advisory board. At last night's meeting, Council approved James McCleary of Sea View Inn as chairperson; Harry Ashikian of Salvatore’s Shoe Repair as vice chairperson; Janice Davenport of Pancho’s Restaurant as secretary; and board members: Steven Delk of OB’s Pub and Grill, Bernadette George of Elegance Boutique Spa, Brett Karas of Baja Sharkeez and Steve Oliveira of Steve Oliveira D.D.S.

The advisory board makes recommendations to Council on expenditures of revenues derived from the business license assessments. It also brings its operating plan to Council for approval.
