A Fun Way to Get A Handle on Puppy Nipping!

Help for puppy nipping.

Puppy nipping is one of the most challenging parts of having an adorable puppy. It can be frustrating and painful, both emotionally and physically. However, it's an important part of a puppy's development, and must be handled with compassion and consistency.

Here's a fun (yes, fun) exercise to help your puppy learn that teeth on skin is no fun for us (though it feels good to them).

1) Join your puppy in her play pen or area. Make sure you have an easy exit, where she cannot follow you.

2) Start playing with your puppy, using her favorite toys, etc.

3) If she nips you, immediately say your "ouch" word, and step out of the pen, leaving her in there to think about what caused her "buddy" to leave her all alone.

It's best to leave the room, however, if you are unable to do that, at the minimum, keep your back to her, and ignore her completely (no looking, talking, etc. Pretend there is no doggie there).

Wait about one minute, then return and step back into the play area. Ask your pup to sit or do some sort of obedience (down or recall), then start playing with her again. When she's playing "nice," name it "nice," "easy," or whatever works for you.

If she nips again, repeat the process by leaving again.

Do this about ten times a day, or more if you can. This will isolate the nipping, and give you an active way of teaching your pup that nipping hurts--if you want me to be with you, you've got to keep your teeth to yourself.
