Donate Toys, Enjoy Super Heroes, Budo Carnival and Other Activities

Kids, fun, philanthropy: They all go together in Manhattan Beach. Here are things to do Saturday, May 4.

If you're looking for some fun activities Saturday, here are a few.

Free Comic Book Day will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Comic Bug, 1807 Manhattan Beach Blvd. Mattel will roll out some pretty exciting new stuff (Masters of the Universe, Ghostbusters and Battlestar Galactica), the Jarritos Street Team will be pouring soda, comic book artists/writers will offer free sketches and autographs, costumed super heroes will be on the prowl, and thousands of comic books will be given away.

Beginning at 2 p.m., kids ages 5 to 11 can get in on a free storytime at Pages: A Bookstore, 904 Manhattan Ave. Local illustrator Steve Gray will read “Farmer McPeeper’s” and then demonstrate how he draws the characters in the book. Kids will have a chance to draw with him, as well.

  • MB KIWANIS/MIRA COSTA KEY CLUB TOY DRIVE

You can donate new and gently used children's toys, books, stuffed animals, games and dolls Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Mira Costa High School administration building. The Manhattan Beach Kiwanis Club and its sponsored youth group, the Mira Costa Key Club, are collecting toys to give to the Los Angeles County Toy Loan Program, a free service that lets children borrow toys the same way they would books. This is the groups' 3rd annual Toy Drive.

  • Martial Arts Charity Carnival and Raffle

The L.A. Budo martial arts school, 1809 Manhattan Beach Blvd., is holding its annual charity carnival Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The group wants to raise $2,000 to give to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. The event is free and open to the public. Classes, raffle and game tickets cost $10 each. Some of the carnival games will feature a martial art twist and there will be a prize raffle and martial arts classes and demonstrations. Games will include an inflatable Pugil Sticks area, an inflatable boxing ring and a rubber ninja star toss game. Prizes have been donated by Century Martial arts, KI International Martial Arts and The Comic Bug. Special martial art enrollment packages will be available from which 10 percent will be donated to the NCMEC.
