Doing Well by Doing Good: How to Improve Your Bottom Line through Social Responsibility

The Pepperdine University Graduate School of Education and Psychology (GSEP) will be administering its second annual Dean’s Distinguished Lecture Series on Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at Rave Motion Pictures Theater at The Promenade at Howard Hughes Center.

This year’s theme will be Doing Well by Doing Good: How to Improve Your Bottom Line through Social Responsibility.

GSEP welcomes panelists Rick Crandall, Director of Sustainability for the Southern California Division Albertsons Food Stores, Zafar J. Brooks, Director, Government Relations and Diversity, Hyundai Motor America, and Dr. David C Lizárraga, President and CEO of TELACU/Millennium.  They will discuss social responsibility in the corporate environment and give examples of how employing socially conscious procedures positively impacts the community as well as corporate finances.  The panel will be moderated by Dr. Steve Kirnon of GSEP’s Social Entrepreneurship and Change master’s program.

In his role at Albertsons, Crandall achieved zero waste at two stores, diverting more than two million pounds of garbage from local landfills.  Through this endeavor he turned an expense into revenue.

Brooks leads Hyundai’s largest philanthropic effort - a program called Hope on Wheels which awarded nearly $7 million to research or patient care for pediatric cancer during National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

Under Dr. Lizárraga’s leadership, TELACU grew from a fledgling organization to become the largest Community Development Corporation (CDC) in the nation, which focuses its more than $600 million in assets on improving the lives of individuals and families in the communities it serves.

The night will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a kickoff mixer in partnership with the Culver City and Santa Monica Chambers of Commerce.  The panel discussion will commence at 7:00 p.m.  This is a free event, open to the public.
