Farrell, Smith and Coach Jewett Take Top Lacrosse Honors

Mira Costa players take honors in girls and boys lacrosse. Three tennis players make first and second teams.

Mira Costa senior midfielder Tom Farrell earned Most Valuable Player honors and was named to the boys All-South Bay League lacrosse team. Farrell was a big reason the Mustangs captured the league title, winning 10 of their 11 matches. They finished 16-4 overall.

Costa’s Chris Jewett was selected as Coach of the Year, while senior defender Cody Smith was named as the Defensive Player of the Year. Jewett guided Mira Costa to the league title and the CIF playoffs before the team dropped the title match to Foothill High of Santa Ana.

The Mustangs dominated the first-team selections, with five players being picked. They included junior Chris O’Brien, senior Marcus Egeck, senior Ryan Kole, junior Travis Meersand and senior Tajee Mobley.

Girls Lacrosse

Redondo Union’s run through the Bay League and the CIF playoffs this season in girls lacrosse resulted in the Sea Hawks collecting some notable honors.

Redondo senior midfielder Julia Denney was named the league’s MVP, while junior goalkeeper Kelli Couture of Palos Verdes was selected as the Most Outstanding Player.

Redondo’s Tom Borgia, who led the team to another unbeaten campaign in league and the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section North Division title, was picked as Coach of the Year.

“I am thrilled that our team was honored with the league MVP and eight players on the all-league team,” Borgia said. “These girls have worked really hard over the last year and dominated the Bay League. They deserve recognition.”

Denney, who led the Sea Hawks with 69 goals and 21 assists, deserves as much praise as any Sea Hawk. She played a major role in the team winning the division title and was pivotal in Redondo being a dominant force in league play for the past three seasons, winning 33 of its 34 league matches.

“She has great stick skills and a very high lacrosse IQ. Her focus and desire made her one of the best players ever in our program. I know she will excel at the next level,” Borgia said of Denney, who will play lacrosse next season at Swarthmore College.

“Julia had a great run, leading our team to three straight Bay League championships. We’ll miss her dearly,” he said.

Four of her teammates earned first-team honors. They included seniors Allison Field and Ava Elsner, and juniors Micayla Kotzbach and Brittany Ross.

Mira Costa, which finished runner-up to Redondo in league, placed three players on the first team. They were sophomores Taylor Pool and Carly McGuire and freshman Lia Sepanek.

Also named to the first team was Peninsula junior Diane Ahn and senior Melanie Shaio and Palos Verdes sophomore Rebecca Golding and junior Siena Oberman.

Second-team selections: Heather Czech, Ally Barry, Allison Kotzbach and Hayley Newman of Redondo; Olivia Stiker, Lily Lai and Katie Caughlin of Peninsula; Emma Schiewe and Susanna Sieke of Mira Costa; and Natalie Parke of Palos Verdes.

“With six of our players returning, we hope to capture another Bay League title next year." said Borgia. "I know these returning players have the desire and determination to do it."

PV, Peninsula Take Top Tennis Honors; Costa's Corella Makes 1st Team, Wong and Cvitanic 2nd Team

Peninsula seniors Shuhei Shibahara and Chris Dalton and freshman Jake Douglas of Palos Verdes were named MVPs of the All-Bay League tennis team.

Shibahara and Dalton had an outstanding year, advancing to the CIF Southern Section finals in doubles last month before falling in the title match. Despite it, the two have performed well all season in doubles and singles.

Douglas, the No. 3 singles player for the Sea Kings, played a prominent role in Palos Verdes' undefeated run in league and the Sea Kings' romp to the CIF semifinals before they lost to Harvard-Westlake. It was the only loss of the season for Palos Verdes, which finished 17-1.

Palos Verdes seniors Jeff Hawke, the team's No. 1 singles player, and No. 2 Erik Lim and Peninsula senior Horea Porutiu were named the league's Most Outstanding Players.

Four Peninsula players were named to the first team, including senior Joseph Chou, junior Nick Tong, sophomore Jake Hoeger and freshman Kent Mukai.

Palos Verdes freshman Tony Dellovade and senior Chase Ruth, who played well as the Sea Kings' No. 1 doubles team, Mira Costa sophomore Michael Carella and Redondo sophomore Derek Levchenko were the other first-team selections.

Second team: Mira Costa seniors Toni Cvitanic and Will Wong; freshman Dylan Holt, freshman Danny Miller and sophomore Elliot Solandt of Palos Verdes; and senior Paul Levchenko and junior Chris Lew of Redondo.
