MB Patch Whiz Kid: Matt Sena

Matt Sena knows what it means to work hard and study, play, run, pitch, throw, catch, sing, dance, swim.

Each week, Manhattan Beach Patch will recognize individual kids, teens, youth groups and sports teams that wow us with their accomplishments. Send your nominations to Liz.Spear@patch.com. We want to hear about these amazing children and teens, and we will select one each week as the Manhattan Beach Patch Whiz Kid.

We launch our new series with Mira Costa High School freshman Matt Sena.

○      Whiz Kid: Matt Sena, 15

○      School/Church: Mira Costa High School/Manhattan Beach Community Church

○      Accomplishment: Secured a lead role as a freshman in "All Shook Up," a Mira Costa High School theatrical production

○      Key to Awesomeness: Matt's key to awesomeness is his diversity, discipline and tenacity. Named a Fall Scholar Athlete at Mira Costa, he's definitely smart, and has developed a range of skills. He played piano in Mira Costa's Talent Show last week, beating out more than 20 acts to be included in the show. He plays piano, baseball, sings, dances, studies, swims, runs.

I would like to nominate the Mira Costa Dance Team. They have come so far in the last year. They came in 3rd and 4th in competitions last year and have so far won first place for Pom Routune. They even made it to nationals in Orlando Florida. They just returned and did fabulous for their first year competiting against the best high school dance teams in the united states. Not only do they compete but many of the girls are scholar athletes, involved in the community (3 are Sandpiper juniors), leaders in ASB or mustang morning news. The team performs at football and basketball games, cheering on volleyball games. They have also performed in the community at the pier to pier walk/pumpkin festival and welcoming Santa to Manhattan Villafge. They have also done community service as a team sending out letters raising $1000 for breast cancer research.

Thanks for the kind words about Matt! He enjoyed doing this. And Coach Carlos, your comment meant a lot to our whole family. Thanks. And I second Robin's suggestion to feature the Mira Costa Dance Team in an article. They have done so much, they deserve an entire feature! Thanks for all you do on Patch. It is a great way to keep up with what's going on in the community.

Great kid. But what has he done lately? His public needs an update. A big hello to Randy. I have a Giants T-shirt just like yours in the picture. Maybe we'll have occasion for a new one soon. Living in NY now, but have retained most of my West Coast allegiances.

Hey vdg'73, I'd love to know who you are! Just saw this, although I see you wrote it last Oct.
