Mira Costa High Cheer and Song squads placed first and second in a Sharp International regional championship competition Sunday, March 11 in Lakewood.
The Junior Varsity Cheer team earned first place out of nine teams. Varsity Cheer and Varsity Song took second places in their divisions.
All three squads will compete in the USA National High School Spirit Championships March 30 - April 1 at the Anaheim Convention Center after qualifying at the USA Regional Championship in January.
In Sunday's competition, the JV squad performed a "high-energy routine filled with a combination of gymnastics tumbling, creative dance moves, partner stunts, and pyramid building set to music," said Jay Watson-Lewis of the MCHS pep squad.
Part of the JV team's routine included leading the audience in a cheer to demonstrate what they do during MCHS sporting events to entertain and excite the crowd.
"The Junior Varsity squad choreography focused on utilizing clean technique in their stunts, sharp motions in their cheer, and highlighting their tumbling skills. They stood out from the other teams in both their routine difficulty and execution," said Watson-Lewis.
The JV competitors on Sunday were Hannah Anderson, Ashley Cohen, Natasha Cohen, Alex Daniels, Nicki Durazo, Sydney Hom, Tatiana Jaramillo, Sara Lensing, Marisa Pippin, Saige Ratchford, Johanna Warshaw and Kiana Winter.
Cheer & Song Squad is a year-round sport at Mira Costa, with practices beginning in May before the start of the next school year and concluding with their participation in the Richstone Walk at the end of April.
