MCHS Valedictorians: Jenny Sevy

Students with cumulative GPAs of 4.0 are named valedictorians at Mira Costa High School. This year, we salute 16 students. Check back in the coming days to read about their accomplishments, passions and college plans.

Jenny Sevy, an avid dancer, is looking forward to real seasons and other big changes when she goes to Brown in the fall. She encourages her fellow students to stay dedicated in school, as their futures depend on it.

Manhattan Beach Patch: What kinds of activities did you get involved in during high school?

Jenny Sevy: I've been really active in the drama department. I've been in all of the musicals. I've done it pretty much all my life. My sister did it in high school, and all my friends are into it as well. The main reason I do it is because I'm a dancer. I really like to dance. It's what I want to do when I grow up.

Patch: What are you going to miss about being so involved with the drama department?

Sevy: The drama department, the drama room, the people… They're kind of like a big family and we know each other really well. I'm fortunate to be a part of that, I guess. I was a lead dancer in an ensemble. I was dance captain.

Patch: Why do you love to dance?

Sevy: It's basically my favorite thing to do, I do it every day. I'm going to keep doing it in college as well. Probably after college, I want to move to New York and try and go to auditions.

Patch: Are you planning to study dance in college?

Sevy: I really don't know yet, I'll probably study dance, but maybe archaeology I'm interested in. My dad's a doctor, but I'm not really sure.

Patch: When did you start to dance?

Sevy: I started when I was about 7, and I joined the company called Beach Cities Dance on Sepulveda. I've danced my whole life. I do tap, jazz, ballet, lyrical, basically everything, [including] hip hop, and we compete every year at a bunch of different dance competitions. It's a way for me to kind of let go in a way and be myself.

Patch: Out of all those, do you have a favorite type of dance?

Sevy: I like jazz a lot because there aren't a lot of restrictions. You can do what you want with it. You make it your own.

Patch: What are you looking forward to in the fall?

Sevy: I'm excited to meet new people, and seasons and snow and weather and to try something new. I'm excited to leave and go far away for college now.

Patch: Is there a reason why you chose to go to Brown?

Sevy: Both of my parents went there and my older sister went there, so my whole family loves it. I like the location and I like the freeness. The curriculum isn't very restricting, and I like that. There aren't any required classes, just for your major.

Patch: Do you have any last words of advice for students at Mira Costa?

Sevy: It goes really quickly. Cherish each moment even though it may seem like it sucks. Work hard because it really does matter. A lot of people have a negative attitude when it comes to school, but it matters for your future. Try your hardest.
