Miko Shares the Stars at Meadows

Meadows Avenue Elementary School fifth grade teacher and NASA Space Camp graduate Chris Miko and other teachers and space specialists engaged kids and adults in a night of learning about space.

The stars, space, planets, the moon and all things astronomical were explored during a fun-filled evening of hands-on space/astronomy workshops and a special presentation by Meadows’ teacher Chris Miko last week.

Meadows Elementary School's free "Fly me to the Moon" Night included free glow sticks for kids who dressed as aliens or astronauts, an iPad with the interactive astronomy Star Walk application on it, and a telescope station for looking into space.

Fun activities were led by Miko, Joanne Michael, Meadows science specialist and NASA Space Camp graduate, Jenn Simon, fourth grade teacher and science enthusiast, Debbie Cubillos, second grade teacher and science specialist, Tanya Silva, STAR education science director, and presenters from local aerospace companies.

Students could participate in two grade-appropriate workshops/presentations, which included "Thermal Protection," about how people stay warm or cool off in space, "Toys in Space," about how popular toys work in space, "Moon Craters," about the cool craters on the moon’s surface, "Rocketry" or "Straw Rockets," about the forces of flight, "Science Theater," a tour of the solar system with a special NASA video presentation, and "Starry Night," an exploration of the universe in a computer lab.

Sponsored by the school's Parent Teacher Association, "Take Me to the Moon" was free with food available for purchase, and was held on the school's upper playground.
