Mira Costa Water Polo Downs Redondo

The Mustangs take control to defeat Redondo Union High School 11-2. Team hopes to avenge its Bay League season opening one-point loss to rival Palos Verdes at PV on Thursday.

The Mira Costa Boys water polo team trounced Redondo Union 11-2 on Tuesday, but arguably the best thing to come out of the game was the way the Mustangs gelled as they played.

According to Dan Burdiak, who had a block, a steal and scored three goals, “We played like a team, we had fun out there, and we really trusted each other.”

Cody Kelley, who also scored three times, said, “We played well today, and I’m not just saying that because we won. The team really played a good game.”

Dylan Colbert and Matt Thornton had two goals apiece, and Justin Pratt, Josh Huttinger and Jimmy Bissel each scored one. On defense, goaltender Ian Zaun had five strong blocks and five timely steals; Sam Siltanen made a key block at the five-meter line, and Mitch Trainoff, Miles Guerrero and Kyle Allen fought hard throughout to keep the ball in Mira Costa’s possession.

The timing could not be better as the Mustangs travel to their arch-rival Palos Verdes High School on Thursday to avenge their heartbreaking one-point loss earlier this month. Game time is 3 p.m.
