Mira Costa Graduates Receive Chamber Scholarships

Two Mira Costa seniors from the class of 2013 were announced as the recipients of two scholarships from the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau Tuesday night.

Connor Kernochan and Sawyer Fuller of Hermosa Beach were each awarded $2,000 during a ceremonial presentation at the Hermosa Beach City Council meeting. Kernochan received the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce Scholarship and Fuller the John Workman Memorial Scholarship.

Kernochan, who plans to attend USC’s Marshall School of Business in the fall, maintained a 3.87 grade point average while at Mira Costa, was a four-year member of the Principal’s Honor Roll and four-year scholar-athlete award winner as a member of the basketball team. He was active in organizations including the Friendship Circle, which assists children with special needs; Heart to Art, which combines art with helping children, and the Model U.N. team, where he was a member of the 2012 National Champion Debate Team. Kernochan also was a founding member of “Costa Cares,” a program designed to raise money to help those in need in the local community.

Fuller, who plans to attend Emerson College in the fall as a musical theater major, maintained a 3.27 grade point average at Mira Costa. She was active in theater, taking part in school performances including "Fiddler on the Roof," "The Apple Tree" and "The Wiz." She has received acclaim for her theatrical work, including awards from Mira Costa and the Cal State Fullerton Theater Festival.

Tuesday night, Fuller was present and given an additional gift from Workman's daughter on behalf of her mom Mary Ellen who was not available due to surgery. Workman was the elected city treasurer for 18 years before losing to David Cohn in the Nov. 2011 election and was an active member of the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce board of directors and Rotary Club. He died shortly after the Nov. 2011 election. The first scholarship given in his honor went to Payton Lee Buckley in 2012.
