January Students of the Month Honored

Students from American Martyrs, Manhattan Beach Middle School and Mira Costa High School were named January Student of the Month for their academic achievements by the Manhattan Beach Coordinating Council.

Mackenzie Austin, a senior at Mira Costa High School, Jacob Sinkowitz, an eighth grade student at Manhattan Beach Middle School, and Brogan Kroener, an eighth grader at American Martyrs School were honored as Student of the Month for January by the MB Coordinating Council at a luncheon Thursday.

Each of the honored students has an impressive resume.

Austin is the school board student representative for MCHS, a member of the National Honor Society, vice president of the MCHS student council, secretary general of MCHS' Model United Nations, president of the school's Republican Club, and co-captain of the girls basketball team.

“There are always sacrifices in everything that you do,” Austin said when asked how she found time to be involved in so many extracurricular activities. “I really just try to prioritize and I only do things that I love.”

She is currently in the process of applying to college, but has not received her acceptance letters just yet.

“It’s an incredible honor,” Austin said of the award. “Out of all the students that go to Mira Costa, it’s incredible to be recognized for the things you do because I love my school and I do everything that I can to make it a better place.”

At MBMS, Sinkowitz has made it a point to showcase his musical talents, as he is a member of the school’s string ensemble, as well as the chamber orchestra.

“I’m pretty excited,” Sinkowitz said, who also commented that he plans to follow in the footsteps of his father and become a doctor. “This is the first time I’ve won the award and I feel honored to have been selected.”

Kroener is a bit less sure of his career path, saying that he wants to become a lawyer because it seems like a “fun job.” He said he appreciates the honor bestowed upon him by the American Martyrs faculty.

“I feel really blessed that my teachers selected me,” Kroener said. “I’m very happy because I’ve worked really hard and I see it paying off.”

The February edition of the Student of the Month luncheon will take place February 16.
