Public School Students Off 'Til Monday

The Manhattan Beach Unified School District won't have classes on Rosh Hashana or Friday. Teachers will work on Friday during a staff development day.

Students attending Manhattan Beach Unified School District schools have Thursday and Friday off, giving them a four-day weekend.

The district closes for Rosh Hashana and then offers students a longer weekend by not holding classes on Friday. MBUSD teachers, however, will participate in a staff development day on Friday.

MBUSD Superintendent Mike Matthews told Manhattan Beach Patch that the district has observed the Rosh Hashana holiday for five or six years and did so when attendance on Rosh Hashana waned. He said that the school district likes to have an "interactive classroom."

During her long weekend, Mira Costa High sophomore Samantha Pulido plans to work at the Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair on behalf of two school clubs, Heart 2 Art and Ping Pong Club. The 39th annual incarnation of the fair is Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 1 and 2. High school clubs and nonprofits participate in the fair to raise money for their causes.

MB Patch talked to her on campus as she and other varsity girl golfers headed out for a contest against West Torrance High at Alondra Golf Course in Lawndale.

"We do art with underprivileged kids," said Pulido, about Heart 2 Art, which gives those children a chance to create and experience art. Two organizations Heart 2 Art helps is Richstone Family Center, based in Hawthorne, and Torrance Memorial Medical Center. She said the work with Torrance tends to be seasonal, such as when the Heart 2 Art Club provides a coloring packet to hospitalized kids.

Another nearby school district giving students four days off, beginning Thursday, is the Hermosa Beach City School District, which offers kindergarten through 8th-grade instruction. High school-aged students in HB typically attend Mira Costa or Redondo Union high schools.

As part of the Redondo Beach Unified School District, Redondo Union students will have Thursday, Rosh Hashana off, and will return to classes on Friday.

The Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified and the El Segundo Unified school districts will be in session Thursday and Friday.
