Walking School Bus Gets Started

Parents and school officials hope it's the beginning of more walking.

A few dozen students and parents walked to school Monday morning to kick off an effort to get more healthy.

Called the Walking School Bus, students and parents as well as school officials, along with an accompanying school bus cut-out, walked from 35th Street and Agnes Road to American Martyrs and Grand View schools.

A Walking School Bus is considered to be a group of children walking to school with two or more parents.

The Walking School Bus effort is part of the Vitality City Initiative, and its aim is to get kids more healthy and connected to their neighborhood. Officials hope all schools will launch Walking School Buses by January, and parents can learn more about volunteering here.

Congratulations to the parents and students who were part of this first Walking School Bus. Here's hoping this is the start of something big and long lasting!

It's a great community program. The kids were excited that Manhattan Beach City leadership walked with us to launch this kick-off route. Kudos to Nick Tell, Richard Montgomery, Wayne Powell, Dave Carmany and Clay Curtain for getting out early and walking with the bus.
