Weekend Spotlight: Rachel Tominaga

Standout surfer and Manhattan Beach resident Rachel Tominaga will venture to Dana Point Sunday morning to compete in a Western Surfing Association event.

Manhattan Beach resident and Mira Costa High student Rachel Tominaga will surf Sunday, March 4 in a Western Surfing Association competition at Salt Creek Beach in Dana Point.

In a December South Bay Boardriders contest, Tominaga took first place in the junior girls' division and the open women's division. In February, she took first in the junior girls' 18 and under division in an SBBC competition and placed in the top five in the women's open division in the same contest.

In a WSA competition in January, Tominaga took sixth place in the girls' 16 and under division and fifth in the girls' 18 and under division.

Other MCHS students expected to surf in the WSA contest Sunday include Noah Collins, Kyle Brown and Codee Stamis.

In a February WSA contest at the Huntington Beach Pier, Collins took second place in the boys' 16 and under division. In a January WSA competition at the San Clemente Pier, he took first place in the boys' 16 and under division.

Late Friday, Tominaga figured she'd get in the water to surf on Saturday, "just hang out" and do homework this weekend.
