MCHS Boys XC Finish 13th at State

Mira Costa senior Kelli Sugimoto finishes in 17th place as the Redondo Union girls go wild, qualifying for next week's Nike Cross Nationals in Oregon, after finishing third as a team at state.

Kelli Sugimoto of Mira Costa High's girls cross country placed 17th Saturday in Division 2 competition at the CIF State Cross Country Championships in Fresno Saturday. Sugimoto was the lone runner for the MCHS girls team which did not qualify for state at regionals the previous Saturday.

Suigmoto ran the Woodward Park course in 18:15, placing behind three Redondo Union High runners: Senior Lyndsey Mull, who finished the course in 17:54 to take seventh place, senior Rachel Bush, who ran 18:06 to finish 13th, and junior Cara Ulizio, who ran 18:13 to take 14th place. RUHS junior Kayla Ferron, who ran the course in 18:15, was listed as No. 16, according to an ESPN race results web page.

The RUHS girls team, which had qualified for state finals, rose to the occasion, placing third as a team behind La Costa Canyon, No. 2, and Saugus, No. 1. Their effort qualified them for next week's Nike Cross Nationals in Oregon.

Simi Valley sophomore Sarah Baxter won the race in 17:08.

Mira Costa senior Adam Perez ran the course in 16:09, coming in 46th place for the boys team, which finished in 13th place in Division 2. Sophomore Niko Pappas finished 109th with a time of 16:43. Senior Zach Adler came in 113th place at 16:47. Senior Pablo Diaz finished in 142nd place with a time of 17:05.

La Costa Canyon senior Darren Fahy was the fastest Divison 2 boy with a time of 15:03.

The girls and boys team from Palos Verdes High took first place in Division 1 competition on Saturday, according to a post on the CIF web site.
