Better Waves in the Afternoon

There's very minimal energy out there but a lower tide makes afternoon surfing more plausible.

Waking up with the waves on Wednesday, I'm Surf Junkie Jeff with your Manhattan Beach Patch surf report. Well this stretch of sand is in need of a jumpstart. Yep, if you're planning on paddling...you'll want to find a spot that picks up the southerly energy because it's very small and weak out there.

The conditions are pretty clean early on, with a mix of mostly minimal south southwest swell and very little northwest energy to speak of.

That recipe is offering some soft and weak lines that are breaking too close to the beach at many spots early on. Look for things to improve a little as that tide drops throughout the day.

Most Manhattan Beach breaks are running about ankle to knee high, with some of the top combo breaks pulling the occasional waist high set.

At 7:37 this morning the tide pushes up to a 5.4 high which will have many spots pretty swamped or even possibly shut down early to mid-morning. The tide eventually drains out to a negative 0.4 low at 2:18 this afternoon, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

If you're going to get wet, throw on at least a 3/2 full or a 4/3 and possibly the booties, with the water temperature hanging between 56 and 57 degrees. Good luck out there!
