We invite you, your family, & friends to come out and help us launch the start of our class project! Come by to show your support or even better…take an active role
in your community by helping spread some mulch!!!
What to Wear: tennis shoes and socks and long pants/long sleeve shirt

What to Bring: a hat, gloves if possible, bottled water, newspapers to spread over site and a large pail to carry mulch in (if possible...those kitty litter or painter's pails are perfect and kids can carry them)
This event will kick-off the start of the Leadership Manhattan Beach Class of 2012 project, which was just passed by city council on Tuesday, January 17th.

We will be installing a Sustainable Garden located on the corner of 15th Street & Valley Drive (Manhattan Beach Chamber of Commerce & U.S. Postal Office Annex). This garden will eventually be filled with many native, drought-tolerant plants and showcase drip irrigation & the use of mulch!
What Is Mulch You Might Ask?
Mulch is loose, organic raw material
(ex: leaves, wood or bark chips, etc.) that is a protective cover placed over the soil to retain moisture, reduce erosion, provide nutrients, and suppress weed growth
& seed germination.
Mulch attracts beneficial organisms that protect against pests & disease
Mulch acts as an overcoat in winter & an umbrella in summer
Mulch helps retain soil moisture & deter weed growth
Mulch prevents slope erosion & water run-off during rain
Mulch improves the overall look of a garden
This event is not only commencing the Class of 2012 project, but also celebrates Leadership Manhattan Beach’s 20th Anniversary & Manhattan Beach’s Centennial Anniversary!
