Mustangs Go Down at Dodger Stadium in Title Battle

The Mira Costa Mustangs fell short of a CIF Division III baseball championship title Friday at Dodger Stadium, losing 8-1 in 7 innings against the No. 2 ranked Junipero Serra High School.

The game was the first time since 1982 the baseball team has made the CIF Southern Section final, according to the Daily Breeze.

Serra came into the game with a 27-5 record, ranked No. 2 and a 17-game winning streak; Mira Costa's record was 24-11, the team unseeded.

Seniors Austin Henning and Kevin Lopez batted 2-for-3 and 1-for-3, respectively, according to La Vista, the high school's newspaper.

Two Manhattan Beach boys play for Serra: Trent Hammond, who transferred from Mira Costa to Serra for his senior year, and freshman Duncan McKinnon. A Daily Breeze blog reported that McKinnon played for Serra coach Wilmer Aaron on the Manhattan Beach Bulldogs travel team, prompting him to attend Serra instead of Mira Costa.
