Paddlers Race Pier to Pier

Hennessey's splashes into its 2011 stand up paddleboard and paddleboard competition series with a race from Hermosa Beach Pier to Manhattan Beach Pier and back.

Pros and amateurs battled waves on Friday before facing the 3.5-mile stretch from Hermosa Beach Pier to Manhattan Beach Pier and back during Hennessey's 16th installment of its annual paddleboard competitions, which began with the Return to the Pier Race.

"The water was a little windy, a little bumpy, but I think all the competitors had a real good time," Tim Ritter, the race chairman, told Patch.

Awards were given out and a raffle took place at  in Hermosa Beach after the race.

The series returns to the South Bay on June 18, July 9 and September 17, in Torrance, Redondo Beach and Hermosa Beach, respectively, for South Bay Dozen, United States Championships and World Championships. The next race is in Dana Point on June 4 for the Hobie Watermans Challenge.
