The South Bay Boardriders Club kicks off its six-event series with some surfing off the Manhattan Beach coast at 26th Street.

The six-event South Bay Surf Series, featuring local stand-out surfers of all ages, got participants all wet for the first time this season at 26th Street in Manhattan Beach Sunday.

Some of the area's top wave riders took to the water to participate in the South Bay Boardriders Club's surf series, which includes six contests for all age groups, according to the boardriders club's website.

Piper Magraudy, 9, of Manhattan Beach and Mira Costa High School surfer Rachel Tominaga competed in the contest. Other surfers came from nearby Hawthorne and San Clemente, down south. Prizes will be awarded to finalists in each division. Contestants receive T-shirts and other items for entering the contest.

Said former pro surfer Ted Robinson about the surf series last year, after winning the master's division,"It's about time the South Bay had something to go to, to compete in as a family, as an organization, as a support group."

The series concludes its season with championships in May.
