Surf Washes the Pain Away

The Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation's Ocean Therapy program helps veterans struggling with mental/emotional issues.

Through a program dubbed "Ocean Therapy"--the brainchild of occupational therapist Carly Rogers, who presents her program in partnership with the Jimmy Miller Foundation--veterans that have been through rough times find a new lease on life.

Using occupational therapy techniques, Ocean Therapy is Rogers' way of combining the activity of surfing with group discussion meetings in an attempt to alleviate symptoms of mental and emotional disorders (such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) that veterans can suffer from.

Manhattan Beach Patch caught up with Rogers, Jim Miller (co-founder of the Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation, named after his son whose suicide was preceded by severe mental illness) and some of the veterans participating during and after an Ocean Therapy session.
