Waves Loom Large in El Porto

The big waves that were expected to hit the coastline did in Manhattan Beach. Early Friday afternoon, the sets sometimes came one after the other, followed by a flat spell in which the ocean looked like a lake.

The television news crews were out looking for large waves Friday, as were curious onlookers.

In El Porto, Manhattan Beach's northernmost beach, KTLA and KABC news vans joined other vehicles in the sandside parking lot, as did a Manhattan Beach policeman on motorcycle who took in the view.

No surfers were in the water but three young men had fun diving under the waves and in the white froth a distance out. Others gathered along the shoreline, wading out a bit in very shallow water, then running screaming excitedly as a larger wave came in toward them.

A Lifeguard Rescue watercraft bolted through the surf, as another wetsuit-clad lifeguard held on to enjoy the ride. Watercraft could be seen beyond the lines of waves, ripping along on flatter, calmer water than was closer to shore.

The Lifeguard watercraft returned toward the shore, dropping off the lifeguard who'd just gone for quite a ride.
