Surfing MB: Boardriders Club Holds Contest

Surfers take to the waves in the club's third competition in the surf series. It's a fun, daylong event in El Porto Saturday, Feb. 18.

Surf and beach lovers will want to catch the action of the 2nd Annual South Bay Surf series presented by the SB Boardriders Club's at El Porto on Saturday, Feb. 18. The daylong affair epitomizes the best in surfing culture, bringing together all ages for a fun and competitive day.

The previous contest in the surf series, #2, was held on Saturday, Jan. 28, after the original Jan. 21 date was postponed. Held on the beach near Marine Avenue and 26th Street, the daylong event met with sunshine and waves.

The Feb. 18 competition will take place near 45th Street and Ocean Drive. "Dive N’ Surf and Body Glove plan on having many of their top team riders in attendance to hang out with the local groms, including Jamie O’Brien, Cheyne Magnusson, Alex Gray, Nate Yeomans and Anthony Walsh," according to the boardriders' website.

Winning surfers in event #2, sponsored by E.T. Surf, include first place finishers in their respective divisions: Rachel Tominaga, Natalie Anzivino, Shaun Burrell, Kelly Zaun, Peter Healey, Shane Moseley, Dave Shaefer, Donny Wilson and Scott Daley.

Familiar names, local and otherwise, who placed that day include Jordan Wible, Mike Purpus, Noah Collins, Conor Beatty, Susan Steinmetz, Dane Zaun, Derek Brewer and Dayton Silva.

The SB Boardriders Club website now has video footage, by award winning producer Marci Klein at videomemories.tv, from Jan. 28 online. 

The Saturday, Feb. 18 competition runs from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. approximately. The contest is open to club members and non-members. Sign ups for the March 17 contest, #4 in the series, at El Porto are due by 5 p.m. on Friday, March 16, according to the website.

Competition is open to all ages, including those under nine and over 50. There is also a longboard category.
