Photo of the Day: Lifeguard Encounters the Stanley Cup

Sun, sand, sea and Stanley - that's what Sunday brought to the shore of Manhattan Beach. Do you know the two guys in the photo? Read about how their paths managed to cross.

Lifeguard Kip Jerger got to pose with Los Angeles Kings player Anze Kopitar and the Stanley Cup on Sunday.

Kopitar, a Manhattan Beach resident, took the 34.5 pound Cup for a stroll on the beach near First Street and The Strand. On-duty, Jerger, also an MB resident, handed his iPhone to someone to record the momentous occasion.

I had a much-less-fun (and less-than-encouraging) encounter with some Manhattan Beach-patrolling lifeguards on Sunday just a bit North of Manhattan Beach Pier. I identified a man who was struggling to keep his head above water, and pulled him onto my surfboard--it took what I believe was too long for a lifeguard to react and complete the rescue: http://southbaycentral.blogspot.com/2012/06/are-manhattan-beach-lifeguards.html I'm glad Jerger had fun, though. He's an experienced South Bay ocean enthusiast, I wish he or someone like him had been around the MB Pier on Sunday when I was trying to get the swimmer assistance.
