What's Up: Back to School, 'Coffee with a Cop,' Celebration of Life at American Martyrs

Here are five things for your Tuesday and week ahead: 

  1. School starts on Wednesday, Aug. 28 for students enrolled in the Manhattan Beach Unified School District. There will be no school on Monday, Sept. 2 in observance of Labor Day, and on Thursday, Sept. 5, according to the district calendar.
  2. A funeral mass for longtime Manhattan Beach resident Ruby May Hixson will be held In Manhattan Beach Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Details here: Ruby May Hixson: 9-22-25 to 8-20-13.
  3. Have a complimentary cup of "Coffee with a Cop" Thursday from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, 3008 North Sepulveda Boulevard in Manhattan Village. Come anytime to mingle, chat and learn more about the Manhattan Beach Police Department.
  4. Get in the stride of things by joining the Mayor's Walk 'N' Talk on Tuesday, Sept. 3. Mayor David Lesser will set off on foot with community members around 8 a.m. from Peet's Coffee and Tea at 328 Manhattan Beach Boulevard. The walk is a great way to get some exercise, fresh air and learn more about the city.
