I was only around this icon a few times. Every time he was the "most interesting man ..."Read More The most engaging guy in the room. His stories were always inspirational. Even though wildly successful he returned phone calls and always answered his own phone. He was incredibly generous to many organizations in the South Bay. Always without hesitation we would donate. I called him a short while ago to speak at our Rotary club. He did not think twice, said absolutely as long as I can bring my wife. We have lost an icon, a South Bay legend. Even though I did not know Bob Meistrell I feel really lucky to have met him.

A few years back, when Body Glove was still on 6th Street in Hermosa, Bob noticed me coming aroundRead More after closing time on several occasions. He asked (with a smile) if I was casing the place. I admitted that I was, in a sense. I was using the buildings in a novel I was writing called, "THE HI-TEC ROCKS." (AMAZON) The compound was destined to become the world headquarters for Turner Sound Systems. He invited me inside and let me look around all I wanted. His only request was that I give him a copy when it was published. Of course I readily agreed. except that it wasn't published until a year ago. I was always intending on sending him the promised payment, but it just didn't seem like something he would remember after all this time. Very sorry I never got around to it.

What a kind, wonderful man! A true Christian, he truly walked the walk! The wonderful stories heRead More told as he Captained his boat! A real loss to all. May the Meistrell Family find comfort in knowing that Bob affected many lives in such positive ways!

I was honored to know and respect you at California Coastal Commission hearings and quite a fewRead More local council meetings over the years. You're departure was way to soon, and you will be missed by beach volleyball enthusiasts here in the South Bay , across the USA and abroad. RIP my friend.

Thanks, Mike. Erin's words already were already brave and generous, but her being so close in age toRead More my Mom put them in boldface for me.

Definitely, touching to read about Erin Vidovich and her journey with breast cancer. Sending myRead More heartfelt sympathies to Erin's family, friends and all those lucky to have known Erin. Reason I was very "touched" by this article, I too, was diagnosed stage 3 because of dense breasts (I had an "all clear" mammogram 4 months prior to diagnose). I have a feeling I met Erin at a pre- fashion show (I think it was her) -- we tried on clothes to wear in the fashion show. Sizes were too small for me! We did chat for a short while... Regardless (whether I met her or not), Erin is an inspiration for me, as is her husband -- Erin's story certainly did "touch" my heart/in a way I want to be touched! And to "that college professor" = Erin certainly ended up on the top of her class! I will keep Erin and her family in my prayers and thoughts. Thank you for sharing Erin's story.

...and...in addition to my previous e-mail comment...the "fashion show" (if I did, indeed,Read More meet Erin) needs an explanation (to those thinking breast cancer and a fashion show?) Yes, it was a fashion show for those who had breast cancer to participate in....and I did just spend (after writing my previous e-mail) the last hour reading Erin's "blogs" (never have read a "blog")....I am at a loss for words....the blogs made me smile and then weep at times....I will be keeping Erin in my thoughts for a long time....Erin has definitely touched my heart in a very special way. Got the pleasure of meeting Huell at a UC Davis fund raiser. He was very nice and so funny. We haveRead More a picture we took with him and also he signed a t-shirt we have framed. Almost all our trips are because of him. He helped us learn and love California. RIP Huell.
joebanana March 3, 2013 at 02:55 am
Wow, Huell is so cool. So sad to hear the tragic news, he'll be greatly missed. There will never beRead More anybody as cool as Huell. I hope KCET will keep playing reruns.

One of our family treasures. My daughter, Molly, was unimpressed, however, and did a greatRead More impersonation of his "Hah, Ahm Hoowell Howser, etc." which in turn became a special memory for me. We promise ourselves to visit at least one of his special places.

Dr.O was the best doctor our family could of asked for! He was kind, caring, and concerned about ourRead More family. My husband was very young when he started going to see him...way before his amazing practice he worked at Sears! I requested Dr.0 To my entire staff at Grand View Elementary!! We all respected him and speak fondly of him! You will be sorely missed by my family and many of my friends! Julie Brancato

Called to make an appointment today...didn't know, he was a great doctor, and seemed like a greatRead More person, full of humor, kindness, and a pride for his family. He will be greatly missed, my thoughts and prayers to all of his family and friends. He truly was not just a great doctor, but a great man.

It is very unexpected, wow. My thoughts go the family. I knew Dr. Orenic, as an enteringRead More optometry student shadowing him for a few hours before he started his own practice. He was very good with patients. Now as an optometrist myself, I think the community has lost a great doctor.

"... there's one thing, I know the blues they send to greet me won't defeat me. It won't beRead More long 'till happiness steps up to greet me." My favorite Hal David lyric, I think, though it's hard to pick from so many great songs! These words have suck with me since I was a kid. :) What's your favorite Hal David lyric or song?

As a mother of a Mira Costa teenage girl, my heart goes out to Rachel's parents, family &Read More friends, as well as the male driver & his family. What a horrible tradgedy that no words can soften. Please know that you are in my prayers. Also, i am confident that this circumstance will open the eyes of other teens to keep themselves buckled up & Rachel's death will help save countless lives we may never learn about. God's peace.
debra April 16, 2012 at 06:26 pm
We are having a fundraiser for Rachel's family during this very difficult time. Come to The CounterRead More Restaurant on Pier Avenue in Hermosa Beach on Thursday, April 19, 2012 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and eat--dine in, take out, say you are there for Rachel and 20% of proceeds go towards her memorial fund. See you there.

good afternoon I'm very sorry to hear of this loss and will continue to pray for the family. I'm aRead More web designer and I would be honored to put up a website in honor of her.

Rachel was a lovely young woman just coming in to her own. A tragic loss for her family and ourRead More community.
Denise A. April 15, 2012 at 12:20 pm
Rachel was beautiful in every way. I've never met someone (let alone at her age) that was so gentle,Read More generous, forgiving, loving, talented and dedicated. In her 18 years, she touched the lives of so many people. Had she lived, there is no doubt Rachel would have accomplished great things.
Cathy August 15, 2011 at 05:23 pm
I agree Beau this was a tragic accident and the only thing worse is blaming the large corporation asRead More we all know where this will lead prayers to the family of the beautiful boy but please do not allow your 7 year old to be riding through parking lots alone and prevent tragic accidents like this in the future
Rebecca O'Reilly Boyle August 17, 2011 at 10:40 pm
Beau, you are absolutely right. I have a whole string of posts on Geoffrey's Redondo BeachRead More Patch...so this is a bit odd to see this same story on the MB Patch. You should take a look see over at the RB Patch. Think you will be amazed at the hostility the G man has for residence of MB and his hateful rhetoric accusing anyone with a middle class background of being uncaring or unsympathetic to the plight of working class. He actually resorts to some junior high school rivalry against Manhattan Beach vs Redondo Beach...amazing. It is a valid question to ask about the common sense of allowing a 7 yr old ride his bicycle to a crowded store unsupervised. I've already pointed out that the schools in MB and RB will not let kids in K-2 walk home alone. Teachers or staff make the kids line up for parents or other adults to pick them up, if a child is not picked up by an adult, he is sent to the office and his parents are called. The schools realize there would be huge liability if they let a child walk home alone. Everyone does--everyone except Geoffrey who wants to attack any reasonable person for asking a very pertinent question!

Thank you Geoffrey. Jeremy rode his bike a half a block to go give his mom a kiss and meet her forRead More her break. 50 yards! Having grown up in the 70's and 80's, being allowed to ride to a store on the same block (he did not even have to cross a street) does not seem like a big deal. People walking to this store pass the loading dock. The Sara Lee truck blocked Jeremy's view of the truck and the truck's view of Jeremy. I am a mother. I am a mother (and neighbor of the family) who loved Jeremy very much. I am sickened by people who know nothing more than what they read in a news article passing judgments and seeking blame. Be sympathetic or mind your own business. This was simply a tragedy and it was NOT the first time someone was hit by a truck at that store. It's only the first time we are all hearing about it and a young boy paid the price. Is Albertson's negligent? Many of us believe they are but the traffic report by the police will be the deciding factor.
