Ceremony Remembers Fallen Officers

Manhattan Beach residents gather to honor policemen killed in the line of duty at the 5th Annual Peace Officer Memorial Ceremony.

As law enforcement agencies across the nation observe Police Week, Manhattan Beach paid tribute to its own fallen officers Saturday morning. City officials, public safety workers and the families of fallen servicemen paid tribute to officers Charles Frederick Grau, Richard Timothy Giles and Martin Lane Ganz in an hour-long ceremony. Held on the police and fire department premises, the memorial included taps, a dove release and remembrance tributes from members of the Manhattan Beach Police Department. "By honoring our fallen, we remember their story, their life, and remind their surviving family members that they will always be a part of our family," said Officer Stephanie Martin.

Jail Tour, Jaws of Life Popular at Open House

For the first time since 2010, the Manhattan Beach police and fire departments held their popular open house to recognize National Peace Officers' Week and Fire Service Day. The kids had fun and learned a lot, and so did the adults. Here's the video.

Following Saturday morning's 5th Annual Peace Officers Memorial Ceremony, Manhattan Beach's police and fire departments officially reinstated their open house after having taken a year off. Lots of equipment and vehicles were on display, but the biggest draws of the day were the jail tour and demo in which MB firefighters/paramedics cut through a vehicle to extract passengers. "It's a wonderful opportunity for the community to see what our police department and fire department do, as well as to remember those who have served our community," said Mayor Pro Tem David Lesser.

State May Eliminate Department of Boating and Waterways

State parks division would absorb boating agency.

Gov. Jerry Brown has proposed eliminating the Department of Boating and Waterways, which provides grants for boating law enforcement, marina construction and abandoned vessel removal. In an effort to cut costs, Gov. Brown wants to reduce the number of state agencies from 12 to 10, including integrating DBW as a division of the Department of Parks and Recreation, rather than a standalone agency. The proposal is currently under review by the Little Hoover Commission, an independent state oversight organization that seeks ways to promote government efficiency. “There will be a loss of transparency, a loss of accountability, leadership and boating programs in the future,” said Anne Sacks, former president of the Recreational Boaters of …

I am in the sand section between Rosecrans and Marine. My neighbors across the street are on a different transformer than I am. My lights went out for a very short time (just enough to mess up everything digital in the house), but were on within minutes. The lights across the street were still not on by the time I went to bed.   more ›

Police Issue 377 Distracted Driving Citations in April

Manhattan Beach Police participate in an awareness campaign to crackdown on distracted drivers and inform them of the dangers of distracted driving.

Manhattan Beach Police issued 377 distracted driving citations in April, said Mark Mason, MBPD sergeant, Wednesday. MBPD participated in April's statewide Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and issued 327 citations to drivers using a cell phone, 47 citations to drivers who were texting and three distracted driver speeding tickets. He said holding a GPS or cell phone on speaker warrants a ticket as does reaching to grab something off of the floorboard or back seat. According to Mason, drivers should have two hands on the steering wheel and their eyes focused on the road. He said people who think they can multi-task while driving really can't, as proven in studies.  In fact, according to an MBPD press release, drivers who use hand-held …
