Tamura is the city's first clerk by appointment, which was a ballot measure put to voters in 1997. In years prior, city clerks were voted into office. Tamura serves an "at will" term.
As custodian of official records, the city clerk maintains all official city documents, archives and legislative history. She also conducts and certifies all municipal elections; administers oaths and affirmations; and manages legal requirements for public notice and for the filing of referenda, initiatives, recall petitions, annual Statements of Economic Interest and campaign disclosure statements.
