Sand & Surf Soccer Club Gives Back

The Manhattan Beach soccer club holds its second 'Kicking It Together' event for kids receiving medical treatment at Children's Hospital of Los Angeles.

The Manhattan Beach Sand & Surf Soccer Club staged its 2nd Annual "Kicking It Together" three-hour soccer event for children receiving treatment for cancer and blood disorders at Children's Hospital of Los Angeles in late April. The event gave 173 youngsters undergoing treatment in the hospital's oncology/hematology department and their families the chance to have some fun with soccer. The kids engaged in games and drills under the tutelage of more than a dozen Sand & Surf professional coaches, said MB resident and club volunteer Alan Fox, who has two daughters in the soccer club. Mira Costa Earns Championship Playoff Berth

After losing the first set, the boys volleyball team comes back to beat Esperanza Tuesday night. They'll now face No. 1 nationwide ranked Loyola in a showdown for the CIF Southern Section Division I title Saturday night.

Poll: Will Mira Costa Boys Volleyball Win CIF Southern Section Championship?

The team plays in the CIF Southern Section Division I semi-finals at home Tuesday night against Esperanza, who beat them in April, the last time they played each other. If they win, they'll advance to the finals on Saturday.

Boys Volleyball Advances to Semi-Finals

The MIra Costa High boys volleyball team defeats Dana Hills at home Saturday in a CIF Southern Section Division I quarterfinal match.

The third-seeded Mira Costa boys volleyball team will have the home court advantage Tuesday at 7 p.m. when they play second-seeded Esperanza, a team that beat them in mid-April with a 25-23, 25-20, 25-23 win in the finals of the Karch Kiraly Tournament of Champions in Santa Barbara. That loss was the last time the Mustangs have gone down to the competition, winning 14 matches in a row. If they win, the team will advance to the semifinals to compete against the victor of Esperanza vs. Santa Barbara, taking place at 7 p.m. tonight as well. Police and Fire Open House Following the 9 a.m. 5th Annual Peace Officer Memorial Ceremony to honor Manhattan Beach police officers who have been killed in the line of duty, the MB police and fire departments will hold an open house. The fundraiser just south of the Manhattan Beach Pier combines two favorite beach sports: volleyball and surfing for a fun day of competition.

Matt Pagan, Kayce Matthews, Joel Aiello and Jeff Bowers were the overall winners of Sunday's daylong 3rd Annual Dig 4 Jimmy Surf N' Turf event. Announcing the 2012-2013 Mira Costa Pep Squad

Forty-one girls have been selected to lead songs and cheers at community events and school activities for the 2012-2013 school year. And, they've already begun to cheer others on.

If you get out and about in Manhattan Beach, you're pretty much guaranteed to see the Mira Costa High School Pep Squad leading cheers and songs at school, community and competitive activities. Yes, "Rah, Rah, Sis Boom Bah" in the hands of MCHS students is about the best it can get. And now, members for the 2012-13 school year have been announced and include:  The new squad is already busy: They will begin their community outreach at the Grand View Gator Run on June 2, host a summer cheer camp July 16-20 at MCHS and continue providing sideline leadership and spirit throughout the school year at every football, basketball and volleyball game.  For more information about the Mira Costa Pep Squad or to register for the summer cheer camp, go to…

Beach Volleyball/Surfing Combo Best Event for Sunday, May 6

Check out the third annual Dig 4 Jimmy Surf N’ Turf Surfing and Volleyball Invitational on the sand south of the Manhattan Bech Pier beginning at 8 am. and continuing until 6 p.m. Music, food, fun, and competition in surfing and volleyball!

Kevin Barry is always at work on something. Mustangs Receive Post Season Honors

League competition in girls and boys soccer, girls water polo and wrestling is completed for this year and 13 Mira Costa athletes have been named to the first- or second-level teams in the Bay League. Natalie Lavinsky shares MVP distinction.

Natalie Lavinsky, Mira Costa High senior, was named Co-Most Valuable Player in the Bay League in girls water polo, according to Manhattan Beach Youth Athletics. Teammates Sarah Crist, junior, and Emily Milstead, junior, were named to the first team and Blanca Magno and Jordan Raney were named to the second team.  In girls soccer, MCHS sophomore Kimby Keever and team captain and junior Melina Cohen were named All Bay League first team. Sophomore Mandy McKeegan and freshman Nonie Frishette were named to the second team. Wilhite Honored as 'Hero of Healing'

Here's a moving and well-written article about Jon Wilhite, who miraculously survived a vehicle collision that killed Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart and two others. Wilhite, a Manhattan Beach resident, was feted on Saturday by the UC Irvine Medical Center.
