Dog Kills Cat, Injures Man; Police Intervene

A 72-year-old man taking his son's pit bull for a walk was attacked by the dog Monday afternoon around 4:20 p.m., said Stephanie Martin, public information and crime prevention officer for the Manhattan Beach Police Department.

The dog attacked the man after he tried to free a cat that the dog attacked and held onto.

Manhattan Beach Police officers responded to the 400 block of 30th Street regarding a call of a dog attacking a male adult to find the man standing in the street covered in blood, holding on to the dog, who was also covered in blood, Martin said.

Officers attempted to subdue the pit bull with the pepper spray, which had no effect, and then used the Conductive Energy Device [also known as a Taser] to gain control of the pit bull, she said. After the Taser was ineffective, the dog ran through the neighborhood with officers in pursuit.

Officers, believing the dog could attack again, used the CED a second time, subduing it.

The dog and cat died of their injuries, said Martin. The 72-year-old man suffered puncture wounds to his left hand and scrapes and contusions on his lower legs.
