Mira Costa HS Begins Waste Reduction Program with A Dumpster Dive!

Manhattan Beach’s Mira Costa High School kicked off Wipe Out Waste—its first-ever waste reduction program—with a dumpster dive this week. The program is being implemented by Grades of Green, a Manhattan Beach-based environmental education non-profit, and is sponsored by Waste Management and the Beach Cities Health District. MCHS students dug through hundreds of pounds of lunchtime trash to find recyclables—and determined that nearly 63% of its lunchtime waste can be diverted from landfills. That’s about 64,000 cubic feet of waste a year!  The waste audit creates a baseline measurement as students begin their quest to divert as much lunchtime and classroom waste as possible.
