A Sunny Day: Record Highs Across the Southland

Cooling winds from the ocean were basically nonexistent today.

The high temperature at Los Angeles International Airport today was 85, and that broke the old record of 82, set in 2012, according to the National Weather Service.

Cooling winds from the ocean failed to materialize today, sending the mercury up to 88 in Santa Monica, where thousands of marathon runners sweated through the L.A. Marathon.

Other 2 p.m. readings included 87 at Long Beach and Fullerton, 86 at Torrance, 85 at Hawthorne and a toasty 81 at Avalon.

Inland deserts were cooler, with 81 reported at Palm Springs and 79 at Palmdale.

The springtime heat wave expected to end Monday, but a "potentially strong Santa Ana" wind event was predicted for Tuesday night, Wednesday and Thursday morning, the NWS warned.
