Black Kelp Flies Bug Beachgoers

An infestation of black kelp flies has been a nuisance for people trying to enjoy South Bay beaches.

Manhattan Beach and neighboring seaside areas have been hit with an infestation of black kelp flies. At its height this week, the swarms of flies covered trash cans and lifeguard stands, but have now abated to consuming seaside kelp.

For many beachgoers, the fly swarms are downright annoying, they told Patch on Wednesday.

"I won't be going back to the beach soon because of them," said Hermosa Beach resident Bianca Ecklund.

Officials reportedly say an increase in kelp and warmer temperatures might be causing the swarms, but the flies are soon expected to die off naturally without the need for pesticides.
