LAX to Install New Runway Safety Lighting System
Los Angeles International Airport will add a safety lighting system to runways in September.
Officials on Monday approved the second phase in a runway safety lighting project at Los Angeles International Airport. The Runway Status Lights system is meant to notify pilots of potential runway hazards to reduce the risk of airplane collisions on the ground.
Installation of the lighting system is planned for September and expected to be finished by May 2013, according to Los Angeles World Airports officials.
A $7 million prototype was introduced to LAX runways in June 2009. Figures for the current project have not yet been released, Albert Rodriguez, LAWA spokesperson, told Patch.
Patch has contacted the Federal Aviation Administration for cost information and is awaiting response.
